Make Primary Care a Priority

Published on Thursday, April 4, 2019

If you’re feeling well, you might think a visit to the doctor isn’t needed. However, having a primary care provider who is focused on your overall health and well-being is important to ensure you stay well, now and in the future.

Get the Most Out of It
Your first visit with a primary care provider involves a comprehensive look at your health. To do this, your primary care provider will likely have many questions for you, covering topics like your past medical history, your family history, life stressors and any issues you’re currently experiencing. However, this is also an opportunity for you to ask questions too. Maybe you’re worried about a disease that runs in your family or have something going on with your health you’re concerned about — now is a great time to open up the discussion.

What If I’m Sick?
A sick visit is very different from a well visit. When you’re sick, your primary care provider is focused on treating the problem at hand, whether it be an upper respiratory infection, urinary tract infection or otherwise. That being said, if you’re experiencing a medical emergency, go directly to the emergency room (ER).

If you feel unwell after normal office hours, like in the evening or on the weekend, it’s okay to call your primary care provider. While your primary care provider may recommend more immediate care, their comprehensive understanding of your health might provide insight as to the cause of your symptoms, such as side effects of a new medication or the progression of an existing disease. Instead of spending time in the waiting room of the ER, it might be okay for you to come in for a check-up the following day.

Your Personal Care Team
Your health consists of many varying aspects, which sometimes require a specialist like a cardiologist or endocrinologist. Your primary care provider plays an important role in managing this care team, ensuring communication and collaboration while looking at your health as a whole. Often, a specialist partners with your primary care provider to address existing health issues while maintaining a focus on your overall health. By recognizing the importance of primary care, you can stay ahead of future issues and go on with living your healthiest life.
