Tuition-Funded Path to Become a Patient Care Technician

Image

February 2023 – Patient care technicians (PCTs) have the opportunity to help people while jump-starting their health care careers. The accelerated patient care technician training program conducted in partnership with St. Charles Community College trains graduates to become PCTs. Tuition funding is provided for students by BJC HealthCare with a minimum 1-year employment commitment to Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, Progress West Hospital or Christian Hospital upon completion of the program.

PCTs work alongside nurses, physicians and other health care professionals to provide direct patient care in the hospital. The training program equips students with clinical skills by combining classroom and lab instruction with clinical training. It is a great opportunity for those who are interested in pursuing a health care career but don’t know where to start or don't have the means to pay for a training program.

Patient Care Technician Program Graduate

A recent graduate of the program, DaCayla Robinson (pictured above) is working toward becoming a registered nurse. The program has allowed her to develop her bedside care, which is important for both her role as a PCT and as a future nurse. DaCayla says, “The most fulfilling part of my role as a PCT is caring for individuals who cannot care for themselves, especially since a lot of individuals are not very open to or keen to receive help when they most need it. Making them feel like it's no bother for me to extend a helping arm is the highlight of my position.”
