Q & A with an Orthopedic Surgeon

Nicholas Wilson, MD

Should I see an orthopedic surgeon?

Persistent or fluctuating pain, catching and locking of the joint, stiffness, swelling and mobility issues all necessitate a visit with an orthopedic specialist. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consider an evaluation so you can be informed of your options.

What causes hip or knee pain?

The most common cause of hip or knee pain is osteoarthritis, or wear and tear of the joint with a genetic component. Other common causes include inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid and lupus, and traumatic injuries, which could lead to post-traumatic arthritis.

When is it time to consider knee or hip surgery?

Orthopedic surgeons don’t only perform surgery — in fact, surgery is a last resort. More conservative treatments for hip and knee pain include injections, physical therapy and over-the-counter medications. However, when these fail to resolve pain, then it is time to start considering surgery as an option.

Am I a good candidate for knee or hip replacement?

A good candidate for a joint replacement is a patient who is active, or wants to be more active, and who is cleared by their medical doctor. Age and some underlying health conditions do not necessarily disqualify someone from a joint replacement.

Will surgery help me get back to my active life, like playing golf?

Patients who have knee and hip replacements typically return to full activity, resuming sports like tennis, pickleball and golf. Newer, more efficient surgical techniques and advancements in perioperative pain control has led to a speedier and less painful recovery.

The compassionate team of orthopedic surgeons, nurses and physical therapists at BJC St. Charles County is dedicated to getting you back to your active life sooner, whether that be playing your favorite sport or chasing after your grandkids. With clinical expertise and options like outpatient surgery, it’s exceptional orthopedic care close to home, in the comfort of your community.
